Construction industry gets £22m to create more skilled workers and job opportunities

04th December 2018

New training hubs are to be set up on construction sites as part of a £22m fund announced by the government.

This November, Education Secretary Damian Hinds announced that 26 locations around the UK have won a share of £22m as part of a Construction Skills Fund that will help tackle the skills shortage in the construction sector.

The scheme has been developed by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) in conjunction with the Department for Education and will allow thousands of people to develop skills in a number of fields within construction.

Each of the training hubs will be based at live construction sites so that students can develop their skills in a true to life environment and learn more about the industry from the inside.

Nick Jones, Managing Director at SD Sealants said: “It’s great to see that the government is prioritising construction and helping to further the industry in what is otherwise a fairly uncertain time for business. With Brexit around the corner, it’s more important than ever that we bridge the skills gap and develop highly-trained workers that can deliver on construction projects for years to come.

“We are always looking for new and skilled technicians here at SD and we even offer a trainee scheme for those who are interested in a career in construction but who have not yet developed the skills required, and so it’s brilliant that the Construction Skills Fund will help to create yet more opportunities alongside this.”

Education Secretary Damien Hinds said on the scheme: “It is vital that we have a strong workforce post-Brexit. The Construction Skills Fund will ensure more people gain the skills they need to forge a successful career and help create the skilled workers we need to deliver on our housing ambitions.”

The Construction Skills Fund is intended to train more than 17,000 people to be ready for employment by March 2020.
